今は、お洒落なカフェとして人気を集めているパラダイスロード・ザ・ギャラリーカフェ。

Now, the cafe gaining popularity is the Paradise Road the Gallery Cafe.

元は、完成直前に施主がキャンセルした住宅で、バワが事務所として使っていました。バワの住宅、そして、熱帯の住宅の好例です。

間口15メートル×奥行70メートルの敷地に、３つの中庭を設け、屋内、半屋外、屋外を、巧みに組み合わせています。

一つ目は、車寄せを兼ねた中庭。巨大な門屋と樹木が、喧騒を遮り、静かな気配に満ちています。ドアを入り、廊下を進むと、２つ目の中庭。中に細長い池と瓦屋根の歩廊があり、個室が囲んでいます。歩廊と池により、室内と半屋外、屋外が複雑に、活き活きと結び付きます。木の梢と、隣家との間の高い壁で、外の視線は遮られ、自然光と自然風のもう一つの居間。

最後の中庭は、建具を払い、大きく開いたカフェスペースと一体につながります。２番目の中庭が室内的な屋外だとしたら、ここは、街の中とは思えない、広々とした開放感を呼び入れる屋外で、建設当時、都市の中の小さな原っぱのような空間だったのかもしれません。。

半屋外と中庭を建築に取り込む手法は、熱帯の都市住宅でよく見られますが、この建築の中庭、特に、２つ目の中庭は、ここでしか出会えない特別な場所です。

It was originally a house canceled by the client just before completion and was used by Bawa as his office. It is a good example to know a Bawa's house and a tropical house.

Three courtyards are installed on the site 15 meters wide and 70 meters deep, and an indoor, semi-outdoor, and outdoor are skillfully combined.

The first courtyard is also used as a carriage. A big gatehouse and trees block the hustle and bustle and are full of tranquility. Beyond the entrance door and the corridor is the second courtyard with an elongated pond and a tiled roof corridor, surrounded by private rooms. The corridor and the pond connects the indoor, semi-outdoor, and outdoor intricately and lively. The treetops and the high wall between the neighboring house block the line of sight from the outside, and another living room with natural light and natural wind appears.

The last courtyard is linked to the cafe space, which is wide open without any fittings. If the second courtyard is an outdoor like an indoor, this courtyard is an outdoor full of spaciousness and openness that does not seem to be in the heart of the city.

The way to incorporate semi-outdoors and courtyards into architecture is common in tropical urban houses, but the courtyard of this architecture, especially the second one, is a special place that can only be found here.
