17世紀初めに創建されたサンタフェは、アメリカでもっとも古い都市の一つ。

Santa Fe was founded in the early 17th century. It is one of the oldest cities in the United States.

サンタフェの街並は、スタッコ仕上げのプエブロスタイルが主で、その間にコロニアル調。だから、旅行前、植民地時代のまま時間の止まった場所と想像したのも当然。しかし、実際は、広場の回りを除けば、歴史的街並はあまり残っていません。

この街は、1957年制定の条例に基づく、巧みな景観コントロールの成果。19世紀末、鉄道の本線がサンタフェを避けて開通したことによる衰退が出発点。今では、歴史地区の6000棟の建物が対象で、新築にも伝統的外観が適用された結果、ダウンタウン全体が、サンタフェイメージに包まれています。だから、一見すれば昔風でも、よく見るとプエブロスタイルのコンクリート建築。

全米有数の人気観光地ですが、人を引き付けるのは、景観条例による明確なイメージ戦略で、差別化に成功できたため。

唐突にマスカットが食べたくなり、ダウンタウンを探し回って分かったのは、日用品を売る店が皆無なこと。聞けば、車で郊外に行かなきゃだめなよう。現在のサンタフェのダウンタウンは、ホテルや博物館、レストラン、土産物屋と画廊があるだけで、居住者の消えた観光テーマパークでした。

The streets of Santa Fe are mainly lined with Pueblo-style buildings finished with stucco, and sometimes colonial style. So, before tripping, I had imagined Santa Fe was a place where time stopped since the colonial era. In reality, no many historical streetscapes remained except around the square.

This town is the result of skillful streetscape control based on the ordinance established in 1957. At the end of the 19th century, the opening of the main railway line avoiding Santa Fe brought about the decline of the town. Now, its ordinance covers 6000 buildings in the historic district, and a traditional look is demanded to a new building. As a result, the entire downtown is in the Santa Fe image. So, even if it looks old-fashioned at first glance, it's often a Pueblo-style concrete building.

It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. The reason why the town attracts a visitor is because it succeeded in differentiation with a clear image strategy based on the streetscape regulations.

Suddenly, I wanted to eat Muscat. When wandering downtown to look for it, I knew that there was no store selling daily necessities downtown. A passer-by said that I should go to the suburb. Today, downtown Santa Fe was a tourist theme park in which there were only hotels, museums, restaurants, souvenir shops, and art galleries but residents disappeared.
