ビンタン島を訪れた目的は、ケロンを見ること。きっかけは、インターネットで見つけた一枚の写真。興味を感じて、ネットやガイドブックで探したものの、情報はほとんど手に入らず、ただ、写真がビンタン島で撮影されたことを頼りにやって来ました。出会えるかという不安は杞憂で、東海岸に出たら、意外と簡単に見つかりました。

The purpose of visiting Pulau Bintan (Bintan Island) was to see Kelong. Start was one picture I found on the internet. I had interested in it. So I looked for the precise place. I could hardly get the information except that the photo was shot on Pulau Bintan. But, based on that information, I vivisted here. Anxiety about whether I could find it was groundless fear. Once I got to the east coast, it was surprisingly easy to find one.

ケロンとは、何ぞや。

それは、沖合に停泊し、魚を穫る施設。昔は、マレー半島からインドネシア沿岸まで広く分布していたそうです。

浮きの上に、近くの森から切り出した木材で骨組をつくります。大抵は、３スパン、大きなものでは、５スパンほどでしょうか。真ん中には、板を張ってデッキをつくり、椰子の葉で葺いた小さな小屋が載ります。四周は、骨組から漁網を垂らし、魚を保管する生け簀として、利用します。漁師が自分たちでつくり、完成まで、２週間ぐらいという、ほんとうに単純な建築です。

このキャタピラーのようなユーモアな姿で、カタカタと海上を走る様を、イメージしていましたが、駆動装置はなく、ボートで曳航します。

漁師は、ボートでケロンに行き、５日間、漁をした後、収穫を携えて、陸に戻るパターンを繰り返します。漁は夜。灯りで魚をおびき寄せて穫ります。浜から見ると、夜半、漁り火が、水平線に点々と続いていました。

昼間は、小さな屋根の下で休むのでしょうが、小屋は、２、３人寝転べば一杯の大きさに、中腰で、頭がぶつかるぐらいの高さ、その上、回りのデッキも数歩の距離です。一晩ならともかく、５日間、この小さなスペースで夜を待つのは、フラストレーションがたまりそうですが、そういう発想自体が、都会的なのかもしれません。彼らにとっては、作業に必要な最小限のスペースで生きること自体が、きっと、ずっと続いて来た無理のないスタイルなのです。

満月には、明るいため魚はあつまらず、雨季には、雨水で海の水が薄まるため魚が深く潜行して穫れない、という話に、機械や底引き網漁に頼らず、自然の摂理を尊重して暮らす、彼らのリズムが見えます。ケロンとは、そんな風に、人と自然が長い間維持して来た、無理のない関係を映し出した装置でした。

早朝、港に、曳航されて、ケロンが戻って来ました。仲買人が現れ、ざる単位で、収穫を買い上げて行きます。食べてみろ、と差し出されたのは、穫れ立てのカタクチイワシと小さなイカ。ピチピチした鮮度の上に、適度に潮が染みて、うまい！。もう少し、もう少しと何度も、お代わりしていました。

What is Kelong?

It was a facility that anchored offshore and harvested fish. In the past, it had wide distribution from the Malay Peninsula to the Indonesian coast.

A framework on the float is built with wood cut down from a nearby forest. Most have 3 spans, and some have about 5 spans. In the middle of the framework is a plank deck, and a small hut thatched with palm leaves is put in the center of the deck. Fishing nets are hung from the framework around the four sides to use as a fish tank. It is a simple structure that fishermen built, spending about two weeks to complete.

I imagined its humorous appearance like a caterpillar moving on the sea. But it has no driving device and is towed by a boat.

Fishermen go to Kelong by boat, fish for five days, then return to land with their harvest and repeat the same work. They fish at night, using lights to attract fish and catch them. Viewed from the beach, fishing fires were dotting the horizon in the night.

During the day, they rest under a small roof of the hut. But it is big enough to accommodate 2 or 3 people, the height is not so high that their head collide with it, and the surrounding deck is a few steps away. Waiting for the night in this small space for five days would generate frustration?. Perhaps that idea is urbanized. For them, living with the minimum space necessary for work is probably a natural style that has continued since long ago.

During the full moon, it is difficult for them to catch fish due to the bright light. In the rainy season, the fishes dive deep underwater since rainwater dilutes the sea water, and they can not catch many fishes. That shows their rhythm of living with respect to the law of nature without relying on machines or bottom trawling. Kelong was a device that reflected the natural relationship that humans and nature have maintained for a long time.

Early in the morning, Kelong had returned to the port. Middlemen appeared and bought the harvest with the basket.

A fisherman gave me some freshly caught anchovies and small squid. Not only those were fresh but also had just the right amount of salt. Delicious! I asked him for another helping again and again.
